Gold Speculators Hit the Exit — Can $4,000 Survive the Fed?
Gold has fallen nearly 30% from its January peak above $5,600. Now it sits at $4,000 — and the speculators who chased the rally are quietly leaving, just as the Fed delivers its verdict today.
🌍 Why This Matters Right Now
The FOMC concludes its two-day October meeting today (Oct 27–28). Markets expect a hold, but CME FedWatch shows 80% odds of a December rate hike — not the dovish pivot many gold bulls were hoping for. Meanwhile, Iran diplomacy hopes are draining safe-haven demand, and lower oil prices haven't been enough to shift the hawkish policy outlook. US PCE inflation data lands October 29, adding another catalyst within 48 hours.
This is a make-or-break moment for gold's $4,000 psychological level.
The Divergence: Physical Buyers In, Speculators Out
The non-obvious story here is the split between two very different demand forces.
Physical demand is booming. UK Royal Mint data shows silver investment product purchases up 295% year-on-year through the first nine months, silver coin revenue up 323%, and platinum investment-product revenue up 118%. Gold demand also recovered during Q3. Despite high bond yields and the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding metals, retail and institutional investors continue to diversify into physical precious metals.
But speculative money is heading for the exit. CFTC positioning data tells the opposite story:
Gold speculative net longs declined 4% to 199,865 contracts — the lowest level in nearly three months.
Silver speculative net longs fell 12.5% to 19,795 contracts — the lowest since February 2024.
Physical buyers are buying the dip. Speculators are cutting risk. With the Fed expected to reinforce its hawkish stance and December hike odds at 80%, the speculative exodus matters more for the $4,000 level than physical demand does — at least in the short term.
COMEX December gold futures settled at $4,038.4/oz, up 0.8% on the session. But price remains below a declining moving-average structure, with short-term averages positioned under longer-term averages. The intraday trend is bearish.
📊 Technical Setup — XAUUSD 1H

Key levels:
The support/demand zone is located between $3,990 and $4,010. This is the area currently being tested and has previously attracted buying interest.
$4,000 is a key psychological round-number level and serves as an important defense line for buyers.
On the upside, the first recovery resistance lies between $4,065 and $4,115, where short-term moving averages may create selling pressure. A recovery above this range would suggest that bearish pressure is beginning to fade.
The next intermediate resistance zone is between $4,175 and $4,200, representing a previous market structure area.
The major supply/resistance zone is located between $4,220 and $4,285. A decisive move above this region would significantly weaken the bearish structure.
Overall, if price can hold sustainably above $4,000 and recover above 4,065–4,115, it would indicate that selling pressure is easing. A break and hold above $4,220 would materially improve the short-term outlook and could open the way for a larger recovery.
But until that happens, the bias stays bearish. Price is below key moving averages and under the major 4,200–4,220 resistance zone. Rallies into that area should face selling pressure.
⚠️ Risk View — The Bull Case Isn't Dead
The decline in net-long exposure doesn't guarantee a breakdown. It may reflect profit-taking, risk reduction, or rising shorts — not necessarily a fully bearish market. Momentum buying has weakened, particularly in silver, but that doesn't mean the floor collapses.
If the Fed signals patience on December — or if Iran diplomacy stalls and geopolitical risk returns — gold could defend $4,000 and rebound toward 4,065–4,115. Physical demand provides a genuine floor. A reclaim of $4,220 would invalidate the bearish structure entirely.
The risk to the bearish setup is a dovish surprise today. Watch the statement language and press conference tone — any softening on "higher for longer" could trigger a short-covering bounce.

The setup is straightforward: $4,000 is the line.
Defense confirmed → Rebound toward 4,065–4,115, with 4,175–4,200 as the next test.
Clean hourly break below $3,990 → Bearish momentum accelerates, price searches for the next support.
The Fed is the trigger. Everything else — physical demand, CFTC positioning, Iran diplomacy — is context until that decision lands. Watch the price reaction at $4,000 in the hours after the statement. That reaction tells you everything you need to know.
