Gasoline and diesel prices in the United States hit record highs for this periodGolden Ten Data reported on April 15 that U.S. retail gasoline and diesel prices have reached their highest historical seasonal levels, becoming a major pain point for consumers ahead of summer travel. According to data from the American Automobile Association (AAA), the average gasoline price this Monday was $4.12 per gallon, a record for this date and higher than the $4.07 per gallon recorded on the same day in 2022. Meanwhile, the national average diesel price was $5.65 per gallon, more than 60 cents higher than its previous historical high at the same time in 2022. Disruptions to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz have pushed up crude oil prices, triggering the largest inflation surge in the U.S. in nearly four years. Rising gasoline and diesel prices are also impacting airfares, food, and transportation costs. Since the end of February, following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, gasoline prices have risen by more than $1.10 per gallon. U.S. Energy Secretary Granholm stated on Tuesday local time that gasoline prices may remain high for “several weeks.”

Microsoft takes over OpenAI's data center lease in NorwayGolden Ten Data reported on April 15 that Microsoft (MSFT.O) has agreed to lease capacity at a data center in Norway, a project that was initially intended for use by OpenAI and promoted as part of OpenAI's "Stargate" plan. Cloud infrastructure provider Nscale stated in a release that Microsoft will lease 30,000 NVIDIA Vera Rubin chips from its campus located within the Arctic Circle in Narvik, Norway. This move marks a further expansion on top of Microsoft's previously committed $6.2 billion investment at the site. According to sources familiar with the matter, OpenAI initially negotiated to use the campus's capacity for running its artificial intelligence workloads, but did not reach an agreement with Nscale. Last week, OpenAI announced it would pause a similar project in the UK due to high energy and regulatory costs—this UK project was also being developed by Nscale. OpenAI’s suspension of the UK project and its inability to reach an agreement with Nscale in Norway reflect adjustments to its previously announced large-scale infrastructure plans. A spokesperson for OpenAI stated that the company is still exploring the possibility of reaching a capacity agreement in Norway and is advancing infrastructure development with multiple partners.
