Iron ore giant Vale misses earnings expectations due
Gronghui, April 29 — The world's leading iron ore giant Vale reported disappointing first-quarter results, as operational pressures outweighed the boost from price and sales growth. According to documents released on Tuesday, the company's adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) were $3.9 billion, below the market forecast of $4.1 billion. Vale stated that the strengthening of the Brazilian real and rising operational costs placed pressure on its performance. The company now expects, due to factors like rising oil prices, the cash cost of iron ore production to reach the upper end of its previous annual forecast of $20 to $21.50 per ton. Vale’s American depositary receipts fell as much as 1.8% in after-hours trading.
