SK Hynix's average bonus per person reaches $430,000, with chip engineers surpassing lawyers in the Korean matchmaking market.
According to monitoring by 动察 Beating, AI chip demand has driven South Korean memory chip manufacturer SK Hynix's profits to soar, and employee bonuses are reshaping social hierarchies in Korea. This year, the company’s operating profit is expected to reach 100 to 130 trillion KRW, and according to the 10% profit-sharing bonus system, each of the 34,500 employees will receive an average bonus of about 600 million KRW (approximately $430,000). The average monthly salary in Seoul is about 4.3 million KRW (around $3,000).This windfall has led to a series of societal chain reactions:- Korean matchmaking agencies report that SK Hynix employees are now viewed on par with doctors and lawyers. On the anonymous workplace community Blind, employees shared that “the number of matchmaking invitations has skyrocketed recently.” Some jokingly say that couples both employed at the company could earn a combined bonus of over 1 billion KRW next year.- Company work jackets have appeared on second-hand platforms selling for 40,000 KRW (about 190 RMB), advertised as “the ultimate matchmaking outfit,” quickly gaining thousands of views. SNL Korea filmed a satirical skit: a luxury store clerk is indifferent to a plainly dressed customer, but after noticing the SK Hynix logo, immediately changes attitude, calling the customer “Hynix master.”- There have also been side effects: since bonuses are tied to attendance, parental leave is considered “giving up income,” with male parental leave usage dropping from 2.8% in 2023 to 2% in 2025. On Blind, a couple both working at SK Hynix posted that “after the wife took two years of parental leave, she lost about 300 million KRW in bonuses, which is very distressing.”SK Hynix’s bonus system was reformed in September last year, abolishing the previous 1000% bonus cap and fixing profit-sharing at 10% of operating profit for ten years. The performance bonus (PS) actually distributed in 2025 will be 2,964% of base salary—an employee with an annual salary of 100 million KRW would receive a bonus of 148.2 million KRW. The chain reaction has spread to Samsung Electronics: the Samsung union is demanding bonuses increase to 15% of operating profit, which, based on this year’s estimated profit of about 297 trillion KRW, would amount to around 45 trillion KRW. The company president called the demand “excessive.”

Impacted by AI, translation tool DeepL plans to cut 25% of its workforce
Golden Ten Data, May 7th|German startup DeepL, which develops translation tools, announced plans to cut about 25% of its workforce. The company’s CEO, Jarek Kutylowski, attributed this decision to the “massive structural shift” brought by artificial intelligence. Kutylowski posted on LinkedIn last Thursday that around 250 employees will be laid off. The company currently employs just over 1,000 people. As AI tools replace jobs traditionally done by programmers and tech companies redirect resources towards their own AI product development, layoffs across the tech industry are rapidly expanding. Meta announced last month plans to cut 10% of its employees. Microsoft offered buyout packages to roughly 7% of its US staff. Founded in 2017, DeepL was initially positioned as a competitor to Google Translate, providing tools to help developers build multilingual applications. In recent years, the company has also faced competition from translation services offered by ChatGPT and other AI tools. DeepL raised $300 million in funding in 2024, reaching a valuation of $2 billion, and had previously considered an IPO in the US.
