January 2026 U.S. Housing Construction Report
The U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development have released the latest figures on new residential construction for January 2026. The number of privately-owned housing units approved through building permits reached a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,376,000. This marks a 5.4% decrease compared to the revised total of 1,455,000 in December, and a 5.8% drop from the January 2025 figure of 1,460,000.
For single-family homes, permits were issued at a rate of 873,000 in January, representing a 0.9% decline from December’s revised number of 881,000. Data for buildings containing five or more units was also reported.
