Can the worldwide scarcity of memory chips boost the expansion of Applied Materials?
Applied Materials: Capitalizing on AI and Memory Chip Demand
Applied Materials (AMAT) stands at the forefront of wafer fabrication equipment manufacturing, reaping the benefits of robust demand from semiconductor companies focused on artificial intelligence. As memory chip supplies are projected to tighten by late 2025, production is increasingly shifting toward high-value AI-related uses, such as high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and DDR5, further fueling AMAT's growth prospects.
In this evolving landscape, AMAT faces both significant opportunities and notable challenges. With global enterprises ramping up investments in AI, AMAT is well-positioned to benefit from increased capital expenditures in this sector. Leading memory manufacturers, including Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron Technology, are driving demand for advanced wafer fabrication equipment, allowing AMAT to command premium pricing for its sophisticated solutions.
Despite these strengths, a slowdown in consumer electronics has weighed on AMAT's performance. To mitigate risk, the company is prioritizing high-margin, AI-centric processes. Applied Materials has also strengthened its research and development collaborations with SK hynix and Micron Technology, aiming to accelerate innovation in next-generation memory—particularly DRAM and HBM—tailored for AI applications.
This strategic partnership will emphasize the development of new materials, cutting-edge process technologies, and 3D packaging, all designed to boost efficiency and performance. Looking ahead, Applied Materials anticipates that its offerings in advanced foundry, logic, DRAM, and HBM will be the fastest-growing segments of its wafer fabrication equipment business by 2026.
With a broad and diverse product portfolio, AMAT reduces its exposure to any single technology cycle, enabling more effective pricing strategies and margin protection. The company expects to maintain strong double-digit growth throughout 2026.
Comparing AMAT with Industry Rivals
Lam Research (LRCX) has achieved several key wins in the DRAM space, thanks to its Akara etch system, which supports advanced 3D DRAM designs. These successes are underpinned by customer investments in DDR5, LPDDR5, and high-bandwidth memory. Additionally, Lam Research's Aether dry-resist technology has been chosen as the production standard for a major DRAM client, solidifying its position in this rapidly expanding market.
ASML Holding (ASML) continues to see strong demand from both DRAM and logic chipmakers, who are adopting ASML’s NXE:3800E EUV systems to advance their leading-edge nodes. The adoption of EUV lithography by multiple DRAM manufacturers is helping to reduce production cycles and costs. However, AMAT’s comprehensive range of wafer fabrication equipment does not directly overlap with the offerings of ASML or Lam Research, making AMAT a compelling holding in the sector.
