Weekly Market Pulse: Business As Usual?
Reflecting on Economic Trends Since 2020
Looking back at the events that have unfolded since 2020, it's remarkable how the US economy has remained relatively stable overall. While there was significant turbulence during the COVID-19 shutdown and the subsequent reopening phase, the broader economic landscape has not shifted dramatically. For example, real GDP dropped by more than 7% in the second quarter of 2020, then surged with a peak growth rate of 12.4% in the second quarter of 2021. By the following year, year-over-year growth had settled back to the pre-pandemic average of 2.4%. Although growth dipped slightly in the latter half of the year, the total change for 2022 was 1.9%.
Inflation, on the other hand, proved far more persistent and unpredictable during this period.
