Glonghui, May 15 — The three major U.S. telecom operators, AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, have issued a joint statement announcing that they have, in principle, agreed to establish a new joint venture to promote the development of satellite-based direct-to-device (D2D) communication technology. The aim is to address wireless network coverage gaps, especially in underserved and unserved areas. The statement noted that in regions where traditional cellular services are difficult to reach, this collaboration is expected to "virtually eliminate" current mobile service blind spots in the U.S., covering previously unserved areas. Additionally, when existing terrestrial networks are interrupted due to extreme natural disasters or other unusual events, the satellite network can provide redundant connectivity. Analysis points out that given the market share of the three giants, this collaboration may change their approach to partnerships with satellite network service providers such as SpaceX Starlink, AST SpaceMobile, and Amazon/Globalstar.
