South Korea: The AI era has arrived, making technical blue-collar jobs highly sought after
For a long time, graduating from a prestigious university and securing a white-collar job have been regarded as the hallmarks of success in South Korea. Now, with the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) fueling a boom in the semiconductor industry, frontline production workers’ incomes have significantly increased. As a large number of office-based clerical positions are replaced by AI, more young people are choosing to attend vocational schools to make it easier to land frontline production roles. According to a report from South Korea’s JoongAng Ilbo on the 25th, as the semiconductor industry enters an upward cycle, frontline employees in the chip divisions of SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics are expected to receive substantial bonuses. Against this backdrop, data from the Korean Council for College Education shows that this year, the number of people choosing vocational colleges has reached a new high of 2,500, a year-on-year increase of 23%.
