Meta to lay off nearly 1,400 employees in Washington State, accelerating AI restructuring
(1) As part of a large-scale restructuring centered on artificial intelligence, Meta will lay off nearly 1,400 employees in Washington State, affecting positions in Seattle, Bellevue, Redmond, and remote roles. The layoffs will take effect starting July 22. (2) The impacted positions include software engineers, data scientists, content designers, IT personnel, and more, with engineering and product manager roles being hit the hardest: 699 layoffs at one Bellevue office, 259 across two Seattle offices, 206 at one Redmond office, and 231 remote employees statewide. (3) A Meta spokesperson stated that the adjustments vary by team, including layoffs, closing vacant positions, and moving thousands of employees into key priority roles. This is part of Meta’s global layoff plan announced last month—to reduce about 10% of its global workforce (around 8,000 positions) while also shifting thousands into AI roles. (4) Employees in Washington State affected by these layoffs were notified on May 20 and will continue to receive salary and benefits until departure. As of the end of March, Meta employed nearly 78,000 people worldwide.
