The Bank of Korea keeps benchmark interest rate unchanged as policy outlook remains uncertainThe Bank of Korea has kept the 7-day repo rate at 2.5%, continuing its wait-and-see approach since July last year—this follows four rate cuts made between October 2024 and May 2025. The decision was in line with the expectations of 22 out of 23 economists surveyed by the media, while one predicted a 25 basis point hike. This meeting marked the first policy session chaired by Governor Shin Hyun-song and was also the debut for new board member Kim Jinill. Kim Jinill, a former Federal Reserve economist, is widely regarded as more hawkish than his predecessor Shin Sung Hwan. Governor Shin is scheduled to brief reporters later on Thursday, and is expected to provide detailed policy outlooks as well as the board's assessments of the semiconductor industry and the domestic housing market.
