Australia's new capital gains tax rules spark investor confusionAccording to Golden Ten Data on May 13, investors are scrambling to assess the impact of Australia’s tax reform on equities, bonds, and real estate yields. Wealth management firms warn that this could upend trust structures and spur demand for safer, income-generating assets. The annual budget released Tuesday shows Australia has scrapped the 50% tax discount on capital gains, instead implementing an indexation of cost base and a minimum tax rate of 30%. This adjustment is expected to increase the actual tax rate on capital gains. The ruling center-left Labor Party stated that these tweaks aim to build a fairer tax system. In addition, the rules allowing real estate investors to deduct losses from their income have also been restricted, and a 30% tax rate has been introduced on trust income. “There are still many concerns and uncertainties, because after reading these announcements, it is easy to see there is a lack of specific detail,” said Jonathan Ortner, a partner at Arnold Bloch Leibler law firm. He also noted that the number of client inquiries has seen a “significant” increase recently. “Many clients’ situations do not exactly match the specifics announced in the measures, so they have raised a lot of questions,” he said.
